The Constant Variables

Five seconds of quiet
Is all I need to regain my balance.

Two deep breaths:
Long enough to calm the nerves,
Short enough that I don’t lose all-important time.

Eyes shut:
Erasing the world from existence
If only for a moment within my imagination.

But the noise never stops here,
The breaths come hard and fast as the work’s pace,
And I cannot close my eyes to the ever-increasing workload.

Here, stress is the not-so-silent killer;
It announces its presence over a loudspeaker
And demands your constant attention until death do you part.
