Quiet Saturdays

Quiet Saturdays,
That’s what married life is for–
For waking up and not leaving the bed,
For sunbeams irreverently peeking around the curtains.

Long breakfasts,
That’s what married life is for–
For homemade pancakes and real maple syrup,
For two hours at the table not knowing where the time went.

Soothing music,
That’s what married life is for–
For slender fingers to glide over ivory keys,
For hands to strum along in attempted harmony.

Large books,
That’s what married life is for–
For sitting side by side in gentle silence,
For hearing only turning pages, soft sighs, and your beating heart.

Afternoon naps,
That’s what married life is for–
For shutting out unwanted light,
For finding rest in the middle of too-busy lives.

Light suppers,
That’s what married life is for–
For brie and gruyère on lightly-toasted bread,
For words and looks that are meaningful only to us.

Red wine,
That’s what married life is for–
For quiet sips and stolen glances,
For conversations that need no end for satisfaction.

Simply being,
That’s what married life is for–
For peace and comfort and quiet reflection on how lucky we are,
For holding your hand on a slow, meandering walk beneath the stars.
